Drivers for external devices
In computer control applications, a computer must be able to drive various external devices. These may be lights, heaters, DC or stepper motors, speakers, visual displays, etc.
5.1 Power drivers
Logic and peripheral interface ICs are not able to provide high current to drive external devices. In digital control applications, power drivers are required to drive the devices.
5.1.1 Opto-isolator drivers
Opto-isolators can be used to drive low current external devices. They also provide electrical isolation in the same time. The maximum driving current is limited by the photo-transistors.
