Brief History of PCI DSS

Prior to 2004,¹ the various Card Brands (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, and Discover) had already introduced their own security controls frameworks. However, if you were a business trying to align to these standards, life could be extremely disparate, without a single controls framework to follow. Consequently, in 2005 the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC)² were tasked to develop a standardized controls framework, which would articulate how businesses could best protect customers’ payment card transactions.
