Brief History of PCI DSS
Prior to 2004,1 the various Card Brands (Visa, Mastercard, American Express, JCB, and Discover) had already introduced their own security controls frameworks. However, if you were a business trying to align to these standards, life could be extremely disparate, without a single controls framework to follow. Consequently, in 2005 the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC)2 were tasked to develop a standardized controls framework, which would articulate how businesses could best protect customers’ payment card transactions.
