Ethics

The elephant in the room

Definition: The Oxford Dictionary defines “ethics” as “moral principles that govern a person’s behavior or the conducting of an activity.” Accordingly, ethics refers to the morals and values a person holds, which determine her/his actions and behaviors. “Ethics aims to answer one big question. How should I live? Ethical beliefs shape the way we live – what we do, what we make and the world we create through our choices” (St. James Ethics Centre, 2017). De Jong (2010) says when helping others it’s our ethical principles that we rely on, and which help us focus on the needs and interests of our clients.
