Introduction

Abstract

This chapter surveys the landscape vis-à-vis public switched telephone networks (PSTNs), data networks, hybrid fiber-coaxial networks of cable operators and wireless networks. This survey identifies the origins of many important building blocks developed especially in connection with PSTN. The chapter describes how these building blocks proved to be important for all other types of networks as well including data networks.
