I often ask audience members how many of them should get extra points at work if they can guess what their job is. I get a laugh every time—and a roomful of hands. I also ask how many discovered what their job was at the performance review, when they were rated poorly for something they didn’t know was a part of their job. I always get hands up on that one too. Susan knows an admin who thought she was doing an excellent job by doing what she had done before—organizing and supporting others. She was shocked to learn she wasn’t meeting standards. Her new position required innovation and revenue production.
