21.1 Introduction

This chapter deals with modeling scheduling problems. In the broadest sense, the purpose of scheduling is to achieve the effective utilization of resources (including labor, machines, and materials) for producing a product. Production-scheduling techniques consider the demand for the item and the limited resources available and then recommend when and in what quantity an item should be produced on a given facility (e.g., machine).
