6.1 Historical Introduction to Equations of State (EOS)
The most common and familiar equation of state (EOS) is the ideal gas EOS. This was derived in Chapter 4 from the combination of Boyle’s and Charles’ Laws on gases. The ideal gas EOS was represented in Eq. (4.7) as pV = nRT. The EOS for real gases was represented in Eq. (4.9) as pV = znRT. As discussed in Chapter 4, the gas compressibility factor, z, is used to account for the non-ideality of real gases.
