Analysis of Carbonyl Groups

INTRODUCTION

The most of the pharmaceutical compounds contain the carbonyl group. They are analgesics and antipyretics, anti tubercular drugs, barbiturates, steroids, etc.

Based on the importance of the compounds, the analysis of these groups has more importance. The following are the methods employed for the determination of the carbonyl groups:

  • IR method: The basic principle involved in this method is the absorption of the IR radiation by the different vibrations of the groups. The main vibrations observed in the carbonyl groups are because of the C = O, which shows the absorption maxima of 5.45–6.5 μm.
