OBJECT
To determine the surface tension of the given liquid at room temperature by drop count method using a stalagmometer.
THEORY
The surface tension of the given liquid is determined relative to water at the room temperature by using stalagmometer. The number of drops for the same volume of water and the given liquid is counted and let these be as n1 and n2 respectively. Now, if d1 and d2 are the densities of water and the given liquid at the room temperature as determined separately by using the specific gravity bottle or pyknometer, then the surface tension γ2 of the given liquid can be calculated by using the simplified relationship as
