An Integrated Timing Model
7.1 Introduction
The purpose of this seventh and final chapter is to develop an integrated timing model for the implementation of singleton-geminate contrasts, using stops in Bernese, Levantine, Hungarian and Madurese as case studies. This model takes into account phonological and phonetic factors and their interaction on the one hand, and syntagmatic and hierarchical relations and their interaction on the other. Previous timing models have concentrated primarily on either syntagmatic or hierarchical factors affecting implementation, but as we will see below, only by explicitly addressing both types of factors can we formulate an adequate account of the observed patterns of surface timing in the four languages. ...
