REYKJAVÍK

Reykjavík is the capital of Iceland and is the starting and end point of all the tours described in this book. It is also a great place to visit in its own right. It has population of about 120,000, which is about a third of the entire population of the island. Reykjavík means “bay of smokes.” According to the Landnámabók, it was founded by Ingólfur Arnarson, the first settler on the island. As well as a selection of great restaurants, shops, cafés, and bars, Reykjavík is also home to a number of museums and historically significant buildings.
