Why It's Worth a Photograph
The USS Intrepid sits at the heart of the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum at Pier 86 on Manhattan's West Side. The aircraft carrier houses one of the best Cold War aircraft collections in the country, and the museum grounds provide opportunities to capture excellent images of one of the last four Essex-class aircraft carriers in existence.
This impressive ship, launched on April 26, 1943, offers a unique opportunity to get up close to a World War II and Vietnam War aircraft carrier. The Intrepid's rich history includes being the first U.S. carrier to use steam catapults; it was also the recovery ship for the Mercury and Gemini space missions.
The 872-foot-long flight deck and spacious hangers are home to 30 aircraft, while the 2006 interior renovation opened new areas of the museum ship to the public, including the machine shop and the anchor chain room.
