Like electronic systems, photonic systems are designed and built using a host of optical components. These components have specific features that are engaged in the overall optical design to produce the required system output. Each component has its positive attributes, which are vital to the system design; nevertheless, each component also has some negative attributes that a good optical designer suppresses to produce the desired system results. The presented optical components are divided into four major categories based on the system designs presented in the book.
