12.2. Using Vector Shape Tools

While technically any tool that is capable of creating a vector path can be considered a vector shape tool, in Photoshop the term "vector shape tools" refers to a specific collection of Toolbar items. The vector shape tools have been designed to simplify the process of creating basic geometric shapes and various types of complex symbols. This means using the Pen tools for creating geometric shapes is an option, not a requirement. The vector shape tools consist of the six items shown in Figure 12.3.

  • Rectangle Tool. Creates a vector mask that, when combined with a fill layer, results in a rectangular shape layer.

  • Rounded Rectangle Tool. Creates a vector mask that, when combined with a fill layer, results in a rectangle with rounded corners. To control how round the corners are, use the Radius field on the Options Bar.

  • Ellipse Tool. Creates a vector mask that, when combined with a fill layer, results in an oval shaped layer.

  • Polygon Tool. Creates a vector mask that, when combined with a fill layer, results in a polygon shape layer. To control the number of sides the polygon has, use the Sides field in the Options Bar.
