10. Working with Camera Raw Photos

Most digital cameras save photos in the JPEG format, which is highly compressed. The processor in the camera analyzes the image, applies automatic corrections, and tosses out pixels to reduce the size of the file. Usually, you won’t notice a difference—JPEG is optimized to produce images that are pleasing to the eye.

As good as this process is, it still throws away data. And when you’re editing photos, you want to start with as much data as possible.
