The forthcoming chapters (8 through 11) deal with making tonal adjustments, correcting brightness and contrast, and working with color. You should look at these chapters as using techniques to tweak your photos or add special effects. Your first stop, however, when it comes to improving your photos’ overall brightness and contrast is the Camera Raw Editor.

You may often hear people refer to this separate application, included with your purchase of Photoshop Elements, as the Camera Raw Converter, the Camera Raw Dialog, the Raw Editor, the Raw Converter, and other such names. For our purposes here, we refer to the application as the Camera Raw Editor or simply the Raw Editor.
