Chapter 6: Layers: The Heart of Elements 155
Managing Layers
Figure 6-12 shows the early stages of the flyer for a Fall Harvest Festival (originally
shown in Figure 6-1). The pumpkins are already in place, and the scarecrow was
dragged in from another image. The scarecrow comes in at the top of the stack, in
front of the pumpkins. You can put the scarecrow behind the pumpkins by simply
dragging the scarecrow layer beneath the pumpkin layer in the Layers palette.
NOTE The only kind of layer you can’t move is a Background layer. If you want to bring a Back-
ground layer to another spot in the layer stack, first convert the Background layer to a regular layer
(page 145), and then you can move it.
You can also move layers by going to Layer ➝ Arrange and choosing the com-
mand of your choice:
• Bring to Front (Shift+Ctrl+]) sends the selected layer to the top of the stack so
the layer’s contents appear in the foreground of your image.
• Bring Forward (Ctrl+]) moves the layer up one level in the Layers palette, so it
appears one step closer to the front of your image.
• Send Backward (Ctrl+[) moves the layer down one level so it’s sent back one
step in the image.
• Send to Back (Shift+Ctrl+[) puts the layer directly above the Background layer
so it appears as far back as you can move anything.
• Reverse (no keystroke shortcut) switches two layers’ locations in the stack, but
you must select two layers
