Filters are one of Adobe Photoshop’s most popular features; they are specialized add-ons that boost performance. Some people collect filters, there have been entire books written on filters, and the variety of available filters is overwhelming. They’re also completely overused and underutilized.

How can that be? A look becomes popular, and everyone wants to use it. Because people don’t fully understand Photoshop, they rush out and buy add-on after add-on. Don’t get me wrong—I’m always happy to try new filters, and I’m amazed at the wonderfully creative software designers come up with.
