Lead-Acid Absorbent Glass Mat Batteries

8.1 Introduction

This laboratory deals with characterizing absorbent glass mat (AGM) lead-acid batteries. Because they are sealed, AGM batteries require very little maintenance and they do not outgas, eliminating the possibility of explosion and fire and making them a good choice for our laboratory.

We will briefly look at other types of Pb-acid batteries, but will only study in depth the AGM battery. We will look at battery capacity, discharge rates, charging algorithms, useful life, and the effects of temperature on battery performance.
