Months and months of back and forth have gone into this addition to PHP. The main sticking point was not whether or not it should be implemented, or how certain edge cases are not handled. The issue that sparked all of the debate is the user interface (UI); for example, the user experience of typing <<>> or @: (as the alternative method). Summarizing a majority of the conversation in the PHP mailing list is this quote from Mike Schinkel:
