Actor and writer Charles Grodin completed a screenplay he thought was perfect for producer Alan Ladd Jr. He called to set up an appointment for the pitch. Ladd suggested they meet for lunch. Grodin came to the restaurant with a briefcase containing his screenplay.

Before they ordered drinks, Ladd said, “Lately every meal turns into a writer, director, or actor shoving a screenplay across the table at me. Even before I get a chance to examine the menu. You know what, Charlie, it’s refreshing, enjoying the company of an old friend with no expectations.”
