As has been shown, building a proper public key infrastructure (PKI) from scratch, or repairing one which is in a sorry state, is not a task for the faint-hearted. It requires understanding, planning and very careful execution. If properly undertaken, it will also have been very well documented and that is a factor which will pay dividends if, for various reasons, the PKI undergoes a significant increase in scale. The primary reasons for such an expansion in size may be as follows:
