Put simply, a digital certificate is a file. Within this file, certain details about either an individual or an organisation are to be found. This information is usually verified by a third party, the certificate authority (CA). Once the CA has verified that the individual or organisation really does exist, then they are happy to issue a digital certificate containing the appropriate details. Certificates are also commonly issued for web sites, using the same rigour of a CA to verify that they are what they appear to be.
