C.1. Organization and digital, between hybridization and calculability of reality
Organization is a research subject characterized by a diversity of approaches and currents of thought and by a multitude of concepts (communication of or within organizations, organizational theories, organizational knowledge, etc.). Caught in the net of the “information society“ or the “knowledge society”, the modern organization is undergoing many tensions and transformations generated by the increasing presence of digital technology.
In the continuity of business informatics, which has been deployed in organizations since 1980, the introduction of digital technology mediates the reality and is used in many personal and professional tasks. This trend continues the Enlightenment’s desire to rationalize the world, and specifically the mathematization of the world of Leibnitz, through an ersatz that is instrumentation. The action of digital technology on reality allows its calculability (albeit still partial), a situation which is nowadays achieved by massive data processing technologies or by the predictive algorithms that feed off of them. The quantophrenia at work in our modern society is therefore a major trend where everything seems to be measurable and measured, if not understood.
Another illustration of this transformation of organizations is their transition to “2.0 organizations” (following the same logic as Web 2.0) by mobilizing the possibilities offered by digital technologies. ...
