XPointer Fundamentals

The purpose of XPointer is to identify fragments of XML for any URI reference where the Internet media type is either "text/xml" or "application/xml." In other words, XPointer supports addressing within the internal structure of XML documents and the location of fragments of XML within those documents that are of particular interest.

To put this another way, XPointer allows the structure of a hierarchical document to be examined and a choice to be made from the various components of that hierarchical structure based on their properties, such as element types, attribute values, character content, and relative position.
