To exploit the commercial uses of XML, one of the key issues is being able to exchange data with your customers, whether that is in a business-to-consumer (B2C) or business-to-business (B2B) setting.

It is important to appreciate that B2C and B2B e-commerce are not two separate activities—at least, they are unlikely to be in the most efficient e-businesses. For example, the operation of an online book retailer is likely to depend in important ways on linkage of orders arriving through the B2C component of the business being transferred to the B2B aspect of the business (the supply chain, to include "just in time" ordering, for example) and processed efficiently there.
