Checking for Installation Errors
If the ping and tracert commands indicate that you are not able to communicate on the network, it's time to check the network configuration on your computer. Depending on your environment, you'll find that your computer was either manually configured, or used DHCP. For a small Windows 2000/XP network, another automatic form of address configuration can also be used: Automatic Private Internet Protocol Addressing (APIPA), although, as I explained in Chapter 17, “Building Your Own Network,” I don't recommend using APIPA.
