Idea and Rhythm-Mood Beats

 

 

You have now reached the beating heart of a play and it will challenge all your sensibilities, all your feelings. These emotions are difficult to pinpoint because you must bring to the surface, and actually describe in words, what you both feel and think about a play. It is turning the insides out, showing the inside of the living organism. You will have to work hard at seeing each element’s separateness and individuality. As in the two previous chapters, idea and rhythm-mood beats (moods and tempos) are treated separately here so that you can more readily distinguish their differences and know the force each exerts on the structure of the play.
