Chapter 4Casting
Casting policies vary within the institutions that present Play Readings. Playwrights, directors, producers, artistic directors, and festival coordinators may all participate. Playwrights should research casting procedures wherever they submit their work.
A casting director may be secured for Workshops or high-profile Readings.
We use a casting director on most projects at the York; it makes a big difference. We generally have a two-day open call for each Musical in Mufti, though sometimes we are able to get a concession from Equity that allows us to combine open calls for several shows. It’s great when directors and writers have connections to performers, and we’re open to ideas, but we can’t pre-cast.
