1) Generally speaking, do you find readings of your work helpful in its developmental stages?
I do find readings very helpful in different stages of the writing and revising process.
2) If so, in what ways? If not, why?
Since plays are meant to exist off the page, readings are a good way to begin envisioning what I’m writing in a 3-D space with individual voices. The ease with which actors pick up action and diction also help me to understand how well I’m doing in building the characters.
3) What does it mean when people say readings let playwrights “hear their play out loud”? What does “hearing” a play mean to you?
