It is a great pleasure to write the foreword to this IBM Press book on Policy Technologies for Self-Managing Systems.

Self-management of IT systems and processes is a stated goal of the IBM Autonomic Computing initiative, which I have led for the past six years. Simply put, autonomic systems should shift more of the burden of operational decision making from people to the technology, allowing people more time for truly creative activities.
