Abstract

During the late Middle Ages, North-central Italy, that was characterized by a dense presence of urban powers, was not a favorable terrain for the development of representative assemblies. Yet, even in this area, we can say that a refined culture of representation developed, meaning those practices aimed at impersonating not so much the urban territory as a whole, but the individual city corporations that formed parts of it.
