Abstract

The essay aims to investigate the issue of political representation in the maritime territories of the Venetian Republic. What was known as the ‘Stado da Mar’ was the result of a progressive aggregation of territories in the years between the Fourth Crusade and the conquest of Corfu in the early 16th century. A number of outposts along the seaboard of Dalmatia and Albania, Cyprus and Crete, represented relationship poles in an extensive colonial-trading arrangement.
