Chapter 11. Polymer Processing and Rheology

Polymer melts and concentrated solutions exhibit both viscous and elastic properties. The viscoelastic properties of polymeric solids were the principal topics of discussion in Chapter 5. In this chapter, the viscoelastic properties of polymer melts and concentrated solutions, particularly in relation to polymer-processing operations, are described. Viscous properties determine such processing parameters as the form of the velocity profile, the magnitude of the pressure drop, and the amount of heat generation (i.e., viscous heating) during extrusion through a die.
