Cargoes

Ports move passengers or cargoes between conveyances, which is the core function of ports. We will now take a closer look at the cargo business, leaving out the pure passenger and cruise ports in this chapter.

Port performance needs to be measured, and the ports accounting departments need a base for calculation and invoicing. In most cases type and weight of cargo are used for these measurements. This makes it necessary to take a closer look at the cargoes. Port cargo statistics are often not very precise when using the terms “goods” and “cargoes.” Therefore, it is necessary to define the content of both terms.
