International shipping is the most energy efficient mode of mass transport. However, because no progress in emissions reductions have been realized in years, shipping is an ever-growing contributor to overall carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, and ports as partners along the supply chains are also contributors. A global approach to further improve port and shipping energy efficiency, to reduce emissions and to install effective emission control is needed, as maritime transport will continue growing apace with world trade.
