Lead is a deadly neurotoxin that affects the brain development of children.1 Lead started being phased out of paint in the 1960s and gasoline in the 1970s. Most lead paint has been replaced. Cars that used leaded gasoline were scrapped long ago. These changes improved the health of millions of people around the world.
The United States banned the use of lead drinking water pipes in 1986, but not for those already installed. As the pipes could last a hundred years, without replacement, they continue to cause harm.
