Linear Regulator

Abstract

Switch-mode power converters presented so far, generate noisy environments because of incessant ON/OFF switching of power semiconductors at high frequency and at a high current rate, di/dt. Such an EMI-rich background is highly undesirable for safety considerations called for in medical and other precision equipments. Linear (serial) regulators, either bipolar transistor, or unipolar MOSFET, are then preferred in such applications.

As far as linear systems are concerned, serial regulators can be analyzed by a matrix approach. This chapter does just that, to identify and extract compensator gains for precision regulators, based on both bipolar transistor and MOSFET. Those gains are converted to digital equivalents ...
