Resonant Converter

Abstract

Converters employing hard switching generate a lot of EMI, electromagnetic interference. This chapter presents one of the ways to reduce EMI at the source.

Wave-shaping circuit that leads to pseudo sine waveform is introduced. Since PWM is no longer able to perform output regulation, frequency modulation is invoked. The approach also invalidates the state-space averaging concept that is omnipresent in all hard switching converters. Instead, techniques unique to the quasiresonant converter are developed. Tracing the same sequence, circuit block gains and that of the modulator are worked out.
