Chapter 3: Advanced multilevel inverter topologies

Abstract

In recent years, multilevel inverters have been receiving wide attention and becoming hot topologies for renewable energy applications. Multilevel inverters can be classified into three types such as flying-capacitor, diode-clamp, and cascaded H-bridge multilevel inverter. Flying capacitor multilevel inverter has several drawbacks: it requires large number of storage electrolytic capacitors; the inverter control can be very complicated; and the switching frequency and switching loss are high. This chapter deals with the advanced multilevel inverter topologies with improved performance parameters for the solar PV systems.
