I like eating out sometimes. I like discovering new restaurants, finding new chefs who want to explore the edges of the culinary experience. Fortunately, I live in New York City, a Mecca for food lovers and restaurant fans. So I can indulge myself in this regard whenever I feel like it. There’s always somewhere new to discover.

Sometimes, though, the experience is less than pleasant. Several months ago, I stepped into a new restaurant (new for me, anyway). It was an Italian place, with pleasant decor and Italian-sounding muzak playing quietly in the background. There weren’t many people there, and I was looking forward to a nice meal.
