Voltage Disturbances inAuxiliary Power Supply

9.1 Electromagnetic Disturbances in the Power Network

Many cases of malfunctioning of and even damages to microprocessors are caused as a result of the impact of electromagnetic disturbances (blackouts, noise, sags, spikes, surges) from the power supply network on operation of the digital protective relays (DPRs).

9.1.1 Blackout

A blackout results in a total loss of utility power:

  • Cause: Blackouts are caused by excessive demand on the power network, lightning storms, ice on power lines, car accidents, construction equipment, earthquakes, and other catastrophes.

  • Effect: Current work in RAM or cache is lost and there is total loss of data stored on ROM.

9.1.2 Noise
