As was discussed in detail in Chapter 2, a power system is described mathematically by a set of differential equations together with a set of algebraic equations. These sets of equations are large in number (for a medium–size power system, their number may be in the hundreds), they are nonlinear (they include several types of nonlinearities), and they are coupled.
