What Is a Component?

Simply put, a component is an object that is deployed to an application server that can serve requests made of it. Components fit into two general categories: those designed to interface with the world outside the server and those designed to serve components within the server boundaries. Component is a broad term for all software artifacts that are deployed to an application server. They are generally language independent, and their architecture is defined by the standards in place for the specific language. For example, Java components typically take the form of a Java Bean.
