Given the issues with running a server environment as the operating system for my laptop, it was inevitable that I would experiment with virtualization for a PowerPivot for SharePoint development environment. I have used virtualization technologies (VirtualBox, Hyper-V, and VMware) to create a “virtual” server environment that is as portable as an additional hard disk for my laptop. On the plus side, I can copy a virtual hard disk and share it with team members (assuming licensing of the underlying software is in place). The ability to revision an entire project by using a base image plus client-specific “differencing disk images” is another advantage of the virtualization approach.
