In the early days of sound when the silver screen developed a set of lungs, relatively few sound effects were cut to picture. With rare exceptions, and only on major motion pictures, sound effects were cut when nothing was in the production dialog track. With each picture the studios turned out, fresh ideas of sound methods pushed steadily forward. Both audience enthusiasm and studio competition fueled the furnace of innovative approaches in sound recording and editorial, along with new inventions in theatrical presentation.
