Of all the topics covered in this book the transistor is the one with the greatest potential to quickly become overwhelmingly complex. The aim here is to introduce the most relevant and practically useful information without straying too far into the technical and mathematical background which necessarily underpins a more academic approach to the subject. While not attempting to enable the design of anything but relatively straightforward circuits from scratch, the intention is to give enough of an understanding to allow circuit designs to be followed, understood, and to some extent modified and built upon.
