Securing Routing Information within BGP

Beyond protecting the sessions between BGP peers and filtering of data based on the information learned through BGP, there is the issue of protecting the data carried inside BGP itself. Any security system attempting to secure the information carried within BGP faces a very high set of requirements. For instance, the BGP packet formats have been carefully designed and optimized over a number of years to allow the transmission of large amounts of routing data with the smallest possible load on the transmitting and receiving router, and so on.
