THE COMMUTER AND THE KNIGHT ERRANT

There are two models that I use to illustrate this point — the quest and the train journey.

On the latter you sit passively in your seat and watch as the world slips by your window. The journey is in the hands of the train driver and he, in turn, is depending on an unseen army of track engineers, signalmen, overhead linesmen and rail engine mechanics to get you smoothly to you destination. If you have any contribution to the success of the journey it is limited to purchasing a valid ticket and turning up on time.
