Cars have brakes not to stop, but to travel fast. If cars had no brakes, people would still drive but just slowly enough so they could use a nearby tree or lamp post to stop safely in an emergency. The better the brakes, the faster you can safely go. The introduction of carbon/carbon brakes by the Brabham formula one racing team in the early 1980s allowed the team to win their first championship in 14 years and dominate the competition until other teams copied them.
